Role of Chief Justice

Section 95 (6) & (7)

What, Why:

To better effect the separation between the executive and judicial branches of government, the Constitution now makes the Chief Justice responsible for all matters concerning the judiciary, including;

• Representing the judiciary’s views to Cabinet and the LA including where appropriate through the Attorney General;
• Maintaining appropriate arrangements for the judiciary’s welfare, training and management;
• Ensuring that the judiciary appropriately covers the various courts, and that the courts’ work is appropriately allocated; and
• Consulting the President of the Court of Appeal in all matters that relate to the Court of Appeal.
