Petitioning the Courts

Once the Bill of Rights officially becomes part of Cayman law in November 2012, it will be possible to bring cases in Cayman Islands courts. If someone takes you to court you can ask the court to take your rights into account. The final Court of Appeal in human rights cases for Cayman is the European Court of Human Rights as our rights system is based on the "European Convention on Human Rights", of which the United Kingdom is a member and The Cayman Islands is an overseas territory of the UK. Before that court can be approached however, the matter must be dealt with fully by local courts, including the Privy Council.
