Constitutional Review

A UK Constitutional Review Team led by Ian Hendry (Constitutional Review Team Leader) held three days of exploratory talks about the Constitutional Review process from 20-22 March. This included meetings with the Government, the Opposition and representatives of the Human Rights Committee. There was also an opportunity for members of civil society to meet the UK team.

The objective of the visit was to explore where the Constitutional Review process stood following the stalling of the process in February 2004, and the way forward.

Given the time that had elapsed since the last formal talks in 2002, the Cayman Islands Gopvernment side indicated its desire to move the process forward, beginning with public consultations before formal negotiations start.

The UK side welcomed the recommencement of the process designed to bring about a modernised Constitution for the Cayman Islands and undertook to report back to the UK Minister for the OTs, Lord Triesman.
