Constitution Message Gets Brac Welcome
Members of the Constitutional Review Secretariat (CRS) personally took the message of the Constitutional Modernization Initiative to Cayman Brac, with a recent visit to the island.
Celebrating the local launch of the CRS website, www.constitution.gov.ky , as well as the monthly newsletter Constitution News, the trip also served to inform residents on the four-phase modernization process.
“We were absolutely blown away with the turnout, and found that people are extremely interested in hearing more about the constitutional review process and the issues on the table,” said CRS Director Suzanne Bothwell after addressing about 80 people at the Aston Rutty Centre on Friday, 3 August.
Also speaking at the event was the Leader of Government Business, the Hon. Kurt Tibbetts. “It was encouraging to see so many people coming out to hear more about the modernization process,” he said. “It is imperative that people appreciate that constitutional reform is something that is very important - not for today, but for our future.”
Mr Tibbetts added that the Islands need a framework document that will allow for the autonomy that most people desire, while retaining a constitutional relationship with the UK.
He further called on people to get involved: “People must participate, so they can claim ownership of the new constitution and so that the final product reflects the wishes and aspirations of the people of the Cayman Islands.”
Both elected members for the Sister Islands also attended. MLA Moses Kirkconnell praised the CRS for their efforts in building understanding about how the constitution protects the rights of citizens, and guides the country as a whole.
Also commending the CRS, MLA Juliana O’Connor-Conolly said she was looking forward to “an open, free and frank discussion of the entire process.”
