We Are Now In Phase 3 - Negotiation

Key Points - Phase 3

  • Negotiations between the Cayman Islands and the United Kingdom for modernization of the Cayman Islands Constitution

September 29 – Oct 2, 2008 constituted the first round of meetings between the Cayman delegates and UK’s Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) which were held in the Cayman Islands for the first time. During the negotiation meetings, the Cayman delegates announced their opening statements and discussed the various items highlighted in their Position Papers.

It is expected that another 2-3 rounds of meetings will be required before a draft Constitution is agreed upon. Thereafter, the draft will be available for public discussion in early 2009. The public will then be asked to vote on the draft Constitution at the Referendum which is expected to be held in mid 2009.

The second round of meetings will take place from December 1 – 3, 2008 in the Cayman Islands.
